Castlederg 3-8 Clonoe 4-8

Castlederg’s wonderful second half resurgence just failed to save them from a championship exit at the hands of a quality Clonoe side at Killyclogher on Sunday evening as a busy week of championship football came to a close with a cracker in the summer sun.

The O’Rahily’s powered into a first half lead after Roisin Devlin’s early Derg goal had opened the night’s scoring. Last year’s beaten league and championship finalists fell away after that and by eighteen minutes Clonoe led 1-5 to 1-1, Claire McAliskey getting the goal with Brona Mc Oscar and Doloris McCabe among the points. By the break the east Tyrone girls looked to have this tie wrapped up with goals from Sinead Hanna, McCabe and Mc Aliskey as Castlederg wasted several chances at the other end. At half time Clonoe found themselves in a strong position leading 4-6 to 1-4.

A stirring fightback was needed and to be fair Castlederg delivered just that.  Marisa Lynch rattled in an early goal to give the girls in red and black a fighting chance. Roisin Devlin ran through to bag her second and the Derg’s third goal to leave just two points between the sides. Points from Louise Coyle, Shannon Lynch and Laura Mc Sorley  had helped in the recovery.

Clonoe missed several chances to steady the ship but crucial points from McOscar and the impressive Hanna kept their noses just in front and they edged over the line by three.

Both teams deserve great credit after serving up a real treat with excellent defending and some quality finishing the order of the day. Sadly for the Derg girls it was another case of so near and yet so far and heartbreak once again.
