Even though there was no county camogie action on the field there was certainly a lot going on around the sport during a busy week. On Tuesday evening Ulster camogie in conjunction with Ladies football ran a Ladies Knee Workshop. Ross Corbett Ulster camogie RDO hosted the evening and there was also a presentation from Julie McVey from Elite Physiotherapy of Cookstown. There were Tyrone county senior players in attendance. The evening was centred around causes of knee injuries in females and there was a booklet explain intervention strategies that could be taken back to clubs and used for injury prevention. There were some startling statistics in relation to cruciate ligament damage and the effects it will have on players in later life.
There will be another workshop on Thursday 31st January in Killyclogher GAC from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. It is recommended that all clubs send a representative to this workshop as it will certainly help prevent some nasty injuries in the coming season. Places can be booked via email to ross@camogie.ie and this workshop is free of charge.

The full details of the Tyrone camogie coaching foundation course have been finalised. Gerard Gribben will be the tutor on March 9th at Derrytresk GAC and it will run from 9:30am to 4:30pm. It will be theory and practical based so everyone should bring their own hurl. The cost will be £25 and must be paid to club secretaries before the course date to secure a place. This course, once completed, will allow participants to coach camogie players up to the age of twelve years of age. It will also allow those coaches to train at the various summer camps later in the year. Tyrone camogie will run a follow-on Level One course as soon as October at a cost of £70 and will run over 2 1/2 days. It is hoped that all who take part in the foundation course will help to coach an under 12 team in their respective clubs. They can use their experience gained from the foundation course which will also to prepare them for the Level 1. Anyone who has previously taken a hurling foundation course must take this camogie foundation course if they are to progress to other levels of this coaching accreditation.

The Ulster GAA ran a “Coaching and Games Development Conference” in Cookstown on Saturday past. This conference was totally sold out with around 400 coaches from all over Ulster encompassing all codes within the GAA. Tyrone camogie representatives were also in attendance and their focus was on a workshop taken by Joe Passmore of Eoghan Rua Camogie club from Coleraine. Joe had a very attentive audience as he spoke about his ideas around coaching the female athlete. Joe’s session was very detailed and he had lots of statistics taken from games where the players had GPS transmitters on them when they played in inter provincial games. He was able to show the difference in distance covered between the male and female codes. It wasn’t hard to see the level of detail that Joe had put into his own club that hard work was rewarded with All Ireland success.
Massive congratulations to the Tyrone footballers on their emphatic win in the Dr McKenna Cup final on Saturday against Monaghan. It was double success for Tyrone as Cookstown Father Rocks made it to an All Ireland club championship final when they beat Charlestown Sarsfields in a thrilling match on Sunday.
