Newtownstewart recovered from losing ace forward Aidan Mc Sorley inside the opening five minutes of Sunday evening’s game to win the LCC sponsored Tyrone Junior Championship but not before they had to withstand a superb second half come back from Beragh.

The North Tyrone lads began well playing some very expansive and entertaining football with Kevin Gallagher and Mc Sorley’s replacement Ryan Mayse to the fore. Beragh needed to start well but a missed penalty nine minutes into the game was not the start they had been hoping for.

With sixteen minutes on the clock Newtown had pulled five clear with scores from Aidan Mc Sorley, Niall Mayse, Michael Corless, Ryan Mayse and Kevin Gallagher. Oisin Donnelly reduced the deficit for his side with a fine point but within five minutes Beragh were seven down when Eoin Donnelly finished a fine team move to the net.

With half time approaching Beragh landed their third point of the half before Marty Rodgers hit the net to leave four between the sides at the break.

Facing the wind in the second half Beragh conceded a pair of early points from the boot of Ryan Mayse as Newtown extended their lead to six. However from then until the end the Red Knights out-scored their opponents seven points to three and came close to causing something of a shock with a very dominant closing fifteen minutes. Niall Owens, Johnny Woods, Martin Rodgers and Tiernan Mc Crystal all bagged points as Enda Kilpatrick’s team made their push.

Unfortunately for them the goal they required did not materialise and the St. Eugene’s held on for the win. In so doing they became the first team to lift The Pat Darcy Cup.

Final score: Newtownstewart 1-12, Beragh 1-10.
