Tyrone seniors travelled to Aughrim for their clash with Wicklow. It was the home side that made the better start in very slippy conditions. Ciara Connolly scored first but some excellent Tyrone defending left Wicklow with several wides in the first few minutes. Cara Little pointed a free before Wicklow edged further in front with a free from Laura Smyth and a point from play from Nicole Curran.

Some excellent hooks from Blathnait Kerr disrupted play for the Garden County. Roisin McErlean took a skilful point before Little added a free. Shannagh Goetelen got Wicklow back in front and, after several sideline balls, and some excellent catching by the Tyrone team, McErlean was able to add to the scoreboard from frees. Some good teamwork saw Meghan Clarke pass to captain Siobhan Donnelly and Lauren Fitzgerald, who upon returning from recent injury briefly brought Tyrone into the lead before Smyth brought the sides level at half time.

The drizzle of the first period became a continuous downpour during the second. Grainne Devlin came on for Bronagh Moohan who was injured in an off-the-ball- incident just before the break. Some impressive, dogged play from captain Siobhan Donnelly saw her link with her sister Mairead who popped over the score.  The next ten minutes were very tense with some close marking, plenty of Tyrone forward movement, but tight defending and tenacity from the home side resulted in Wicklow’s final score of the game.

Shortly after that Lauren Fitzgerald linked up with Little who hit the net. Grainne McDonald and Mollie O’Hanlon were able to force mistakes from Wicklow and while Paul O’Grady was able to run the subs on, Tyrone were able to maintain momentum and finish strongly.

The team now face old foes Cavan in the Premier Junior Quarter Final next weekend.
