CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND

The business end of the Tyrone adult championships is very much here with places in county finals up for grabs over the next two weekends.

There’s a tremendous double bill at Ballinamullan this Thursday evening with a local derby to get things started in the Junior championship as Badoney face Sperrin Og followed by the Intermediate semi-final between Omagh and Trillick.

Wins over Clan Na Gael and Beragh respectively sets up this mouth watering Intermediate clash. When the sides met on the opening day of the division two campaign it was Trillick who came out on top however Omagh have improved since then and this will be a close tie.

There is sure to be a large crowd and great interest in the double header on offer on Friday evening at Beragh as four of the top ladies teams in the county prepare to do battle in the senior championship. After their good win over Errigal Ciaran An Charraig Mhor will start as favourites against Dromore. The St Dympna’s edged to a one point win over Ardboe but when it comes to class this season Carrickmore are the team they all have to match. Top of the league and with a raft of score getters, none better perhaps than Gemma Begley, Carrickmore will be hard to stop. Dromore however will not be going to Beragh just to make up the numbers turning up and will pose a real threat on the night.

The second tie at St Mary’s Park is set to be a cracker. St Macartans who were superb at times against Glenelly face Aodh Ruadh. Macartans, the champions, have at times been excellent this term. They sit level on points with Dungannon and Carrickmore at the top of the league table but look more than just a little keen to retain the Tyrone senior championship. The Donnellys, Joline, Cathy and Paula have found the goals easy to come by this season and Aodh Ruadh will have to be at their best if they are to triumph. This game has the potential to be a real thriller and hopefully it won’t disappoint.

Friday night is also a big night for junior B sides Rock and Mna Na Deirge as they meet in the last four at Drumragh. That game will be preceded by the Tyrone minor grade four championship final between neighbours Aghyaran and Urney.

The remaining semi-finals in all grades have been fixed for Friday June 3rd.

There were some loose ends in league and championship football tied up at the weekend. Cappagh went joint top of the Intermediate league with Trillick after a big win over Clan Na Gael and Aghyaran beat Moy 4-8 to 3-6 to book their place in the last four of the Intermediate championship. That game which incidentally is against Cappagh will now take place on June 3rd.

Meanwhile Fintona got a much needed win in the junior league over Kildress while Edendork failed to field against Mna Na Deirge in junior b.
