Loughmacrory 0-14 Beragh 2-7

Loughmacrory will play Pomeroy in the quarter final of the LCC Intermediate championship after they had the minimum to spare over a battling Beragh side at Carrickmore on Saturday afternoon.

Loughmacrory shaded the first half 0-9 to 1-5 after play had swung one way and then the other. The St.Theresas were out of the blocks quickly and by the 9th minute they had four points on the board. Aodhan Donaghy, Pauric Meenagh and Nathan Kelly all scored from play with Meenagh also converting a free. In the 10th minute the Red Knights opened their account in style when Jack Campbell coolly placed the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net after Oisin Donnelly and Nathan Grimes were both denied by superb saves from Loughmacrory keeper Oisin O’Kane.

Oisin Donnelly then knocked over a free before the same player tagged on a point from play to put Beragh in front. Cathaoir Gallagher levelled matters from a placed ball before the same player split the posts from play as Loughmacrory got their noses in front. Play continued to swing from end to end with Aaron Owens and Donnelly giving Beragh the lead again. Gallagher and Donnelly traded points from frees before Beragh keeper Daniel McSorley made a great save to deny Shane Dobbs at the expense of a “45”. Nathan Kelly took the resulting kick and when the ball broke it rebounded off Niall Donaghy for a point to give his side an interval lead.

Scores proved more difficult to come by in the second period with both defences on top. Gallagher opened the second half scoring from a 40m free in the 7th minute before Meenagh landed a superb effort from play sixty seconds later. Donnelly replied with two frees for the Red Knights before they were denied a goal in the 47th minute when the outstanding O’Kane saved from defender Cathaoir Donnelly.

It was anybody’s game at this stage but it was Loughmacrory’s substitutes who made the difference in the end. Leo Meenan landed a fine score as did Ciaran Ward before Cathal Donaghy left four between the sides with only a minute of normal time left to play. Beragh kept pressing though and deep into injury time they were awarded a penalty after Loughmacrory full back Nathan Kelly had touched the ball on the ground. Jack Campbell stepped up with a clinical finish to the bottom left hand corner of the net but it proved to be the last kick of the game as Loughmacrory held on.
