Macartans completed a league and championship double and a sixth league title in a row following their 6-10 to 1-9 win over their great rivals Errigal Ciaran in their Division One League Final at Rock on Saturday morning.

In a close and very feisty first half there was little between the teams particularly in the opening twenty minutes. Aine Canavan converted Errigal’s first scoring opportunity but they were rocked back on their heels when Maura Mc Menamin finished a fine Macs move to the net after three minutes.

Errigal worked hard to deny Macartans time on the ball and their counter attacking style of play saw them move one in front with scores from Maria Canavan (2) and Lycrecia Quinn.

A point from Chloe Mc Caffrey tied the game after twenty minutes before Claire Canavan edged Errigal one ahead as the game headed towards half time. Those closing final minutes saw Macartans snatch two goals from Joline Donnelly and Marie Treanor and the sides went in at the break with Macartans leading 3-1 to 0-5.

Errigal needed to hit the ground running after the restart and Shannon Cunningham and Geraldine Mc Ginley battled hard to take the game to their opponents. However the greater fitness levels of Macartans proved significant in the final outcome and the longer the half went on the sharper the winners appeared. Chloe Mc Caffrey led the line brilliantly while Joline Donnelly, Niamh Mc Girr, Shannon Mc Quaid, Cathy Maguire and Slaine Mc Carroll were outstanding for the winners. Mc Caffrey hit 2-4 in the second half as the Clogher Valley team ran out convincing winners.

The winners will surely enjoy lifting this sixth league title in a row but their attention will turn quickly to their Ulster Club clash with Clann Eireann of Armagh.
