St. Macartans and Errigal Ciaran served up a highly competitive and very entertaining ladies senior semi final on Thursday evening at Carrickmore before Macartans pulled away in the second half to win 2-11 to 1-5 with Chloe Mc Caffrey hitting 2-5.

Errigal will look back at this game with considerable regret having missed a glorious goal chance straight from the throw in when Lycrecia Quinn and Maria Canavan both failed to find the net as Niamh Mc Kenna denied them with two fine saves.

The Dunmoyle girls began the game at a brisk pace and their ferocious tackling and intense work rate meant Macartans created few genuine scoring opportunities during the opening twenty minutes. However Errigal were dealt a huge blow when ace forward Aine Canavan was forced to leave the field after 24 minutes with a torn hamstring.

The teams were level three times during the first thirty minutes but with half time approaching Maria Canavan got on the end of a fine team move to finish the ball to the net to put her team two in front. Macartans response was quick and accurate. Fine scores from Marie Treanor and Chloe Mc Caffrey ensured the teams went in tied at the break Errigal 1-3, Macs 0-6.

Errigal had the aid of the breeze in the second half but it was Macartans who scored first. Chloe Mc Caffrey showed considerable skill and composure to float a fine point over the bar straight from the restart. It took Errigal ten minutes to get on the scoreboard when Maria Canavan levelled the game before a free kick from Lycrecia Quinn put Errigal one up.

That score however was to be Errigal’s final score of the game as Macartans produced some superb support play and finishing to take control of the game. Chloe Mc Caffrey bagged goal number one with a brilliant finish. Three minutes later the game changed completely when Errigal lost Shannon Quinn and Sarah Connolly to the sin bin.

Macartans introduced veteran Maura Mc Menamin to the defence to shore things up at the back. Along with Lynda Donnelly the pair snuffed out numerous Errigal attacks and turned defence into attack at every opportunity. Macartans added 1-4 in the closing six minutes with Joline Donnelly and Shauna Mc Crory lofting over a few super scores to add to Chloe Mc Caffrey’s second goal of the night.

Macartans can now look forward to meeting the winners of Killeeshil and Aodh Ruadh in the final.

Final score: Macartans 2-11, Errigal Ciaran 1-5.
