Tyrone Senior Champions St Macartans had only six days to prepare for their Ulster Club Clash with Cavan champions Lacken on Saturday afternoon. The Clogher Valley outfit defeated Carrickmore on Sunday last in an absorbing game at Killyclogher knowing that they would be out again this weekend facing an even bigger challenge in the provincial knockout series.

Macs started strongly with three quick fire points in the opening five minutes with Cathy Donnelly showing well. However the Lacken girls began to get to the pace of the game and although a Joline Donnelly goal in the 24th minute of the first half put her side two in front the Cavan champions came storming back to lead at the break 2-7 to 1-5. Their second goal was a converted penalty from the boot of Erinn Galligan just before the break but that score gave Lacken a healthy lead as they went into the break.

Galligan opened the scoring a minute into the second half to put the Cavan girls 2-8 to 1-5 ahead. However Macartans responded in true champion’s style with points from Joline Donnelly (3), Katrina Mc Quaid and Niamh Mc Girr. As the game entered the final quarter with little between the sides a series of Debbie Gaffney points put Lacken in control but when it was needed most Macartans showed their mettle. Paula Donnelly hit 1-1 to put the Tyrone champions ahead with the game deep into injury time. However Lacken managed to haul themselves downfield for one final assault and a late, late point took the game to extra time. The score at the end of the sixty minutes was 2-13 apiece.

Extra time on depleted energy reserves is never easy but on the back of last week’s cliff-hanger meant that Macartans were entering unknown and hugely demanding territory. Lacken drew first blood with a point from Shona King but the Macs girls responded with five unanswered points to reach the break leading 2-18 to 2-15. The second half of extra time was like a mirror image of the first period with Lacken first to score and then Macartans taking over. Joline Donnelly brought her personal tally to 1-8 while Cathy Donnelly rounded off the scoring and the win with her team’s third goal right at the death.

Final score St Macartans 3-22, Lacken 2-16.
