Thursday 16.05.2013
St Macartans 4-10 Sperrin Og 0-07
Sperrin Og and St Macartans met in the league final in Dunmoyle. Sperrin Og entered the game as Championship winners having defeated St Macartans in the championship semi final.
Sperrin Og opened the scoring with a pointed free from Niamh O’Neill before the outstanding Slaine McCarroll levelled matters for the Clogher Valley girls with a point from play. There was some excellent defending from St Macartans with Emma McConnell and Marie Treanor instigating every attack. A sfine individual goal from Shannon Rosie McKenna followed by points from joint captains Niamh McGirr (2) and Deirdre McCarroll (1) pushed St Macartans in front. Championship winners Sperrin Og battled hard up front through Claire and Aileen Tuohey but the work rate and team work of the St Macartans girls was proving hard to live with and the Greencastle girls were dealt a further blow when Slaine McCarroll hit the back of the net from a free kick. Aileen Tohey replied with a great point for Sperrin Og after some good team play from Niamh O’Neill and Emma Clarke. St Macartans corner forward Maire Quinn then pointed, Lauren McCaughey collected the kick out and passed a perfect ball to Shannon Rosie McKenna who sent Quinn through to hit goal number three of the match. Eadoin Fox pointed from a tight angle for Sperrin Og before St Macartans had the final say of the half with Micheala Woods firing over.
Half time Score St Macartans 3-06 Sperrin Og 0-3
St Macartans started the second half in determined fashion with Slaine McCarroll collecting from the throw in and sending Naimh McGirr through for a well taken point. Seoirse Conway pointed for Sperrin Og. Erin McQuaid won the kick out and released Niamh McGirr who somehow found the energy to rattle a goal following a solo run from midfield. Niamh McGirr then pointed a free which was replicated by her namesake Naimh O’Neill at the other end. Shannon McQuaid and Deirdre McCarroll worked tirelessly in the middle of the park for St Macartans ensuring they were back to help their defence when the need was greatest. Micheala Woods pointed from play after a fine catch from Slaine McCarroll, Naimh McGirr then blocked a ball in the middle of the pitch before she followed another trade mark solo run with her fifth point of the evening. The Greencastle girls didn’t give up and registered points through Ciara Fox and Claire Tuohey but it was to be St Macartans day and they collected their first minor grade 1 league title since 2001.
