Magherafelt Prove Too Strong For St.Josephs
Friday 25.10.2024
St.Marys Magherafelt 1-12 St.Josephs Donaghmore 0-6
Pearse Park in Galbally was the venue on Friday afternoon for the meeting between two semi finalists in last season’s MacRory Cup and it was St.Marys Magherafelt who justified their favourites tag but only after a late rally saw them get past a battling St.Josephs Donaghmore side.
The Derry lads are one of the fancied sides in the competition this year but they were made to fight hard for their victory here. At the end of the opening quarter the two sides had shared half a dozen points with Darragh Donaghy, Daire Devlin, Ultan Quinn, Luke Grant, Dara McKenna and Eamon Young the players on target. Ronan Doherty and Grant then edged St.Marys two clear before Oisin Cullen left just the minimum between the two sides at the short whistle.
Grant and Eoghan O’Neill swapped points on the restart and going into the final quarter only the minimum separated the two sides. At this stage though the pressure began to pay off for the winners and after Cathair McBride had pointed Grant set up Dara McGuckin for a 49th minute goal. From there until the final whistle the Derry lads took over with scores from Grant, Cohen Cassidy and Patrick Birt as they ran out deserving winners.
St.Marys Magherafelt scorers: L Grant 0-4, D McGuckin 1-0, E Young 0-2 (1F), D McKenna 0-1, R Doherty 0-1, C McBride 0-1, C Cassidy 0-1, P Birt 0-1, S McCann 0-1
St.Josephs Donaghmore: D Donaghy 0-2, D Devlin 0-1, U Quinn 0-1, O Cullen 0-1, E O’Neill 0-1
