Tyrone Masters faced off against Derry Masters on Saturday in Dungiven in round 3 of the All Ireland Masters competition.

Derry played with a strong breeze in the first half and opened the scoring with a free from Eunan Murphy. Tyrone got level with a free from Martin Taggart then took the lead with a point on the run from Johnny O’Neill which turned out to be Tyrone’s last score of the half.

Two further frees from Murphy left Derry 0-3 to 0-2 ahead at the short whistle. Both teams squandered scoring chances in the half but Tyrone would have been happy enough having played against the strong breeze to be only one down.

The second half started with a Taggart free to level matters but Derry sneaked ahead again only to be pegged back again by a Leo Meenan free.

Murphy again from a free edged Derry ahead but then Conor Gormley burst into action with a fantastic long range point followed right away by a great turnover in midfield and he ran at the Derry defence with real intent and smashed the ball to the roof of the Derry net.

That goal proved to be a real turning point in the game. Derry got a point soon after to nullify Tyrone’s dominance but then Tyrone raided forward again and a speculative ball in to the Derry goalmouth from Colly Mc Gurk saw Ryan Quinn judge it to perfection and palm it to the Derry net.

Tyrone now with breathing space from their opponents rang the changes but it did not derail them as Gary Coney came forward to kick a point. This was just reward for the Clonoe man as he must have covered every inch of the Dungiven pitch today. A superb super long range point from Cathal Nicholas finished the scoring in Tyrone’s favour 2-7 to 0-7.

Next up for the Red Hands in two weeks time is the small matter of a match with the Dubs.
