An unbeaten Tyrone Masters travelled to Ballinagh, County Cavan, last Saturday to play Westmeath in round 5 of the Masters Competition. They entered the game with confidence high after accounting for Galway the previous week in a game which saw the Tribesmen lose their first competitive contest in over three years.

However Tyrone were brought back to reality by a very strong Westmeath team who pushed them all the way in an enthralling encounter. Tyrone were missing quite few players due to managerial and playing commitments and so travelled with just 15. Westmeath were able to call on their ample bench to refresh tired legs when necessary.

Following an entertaining first period Tyrone led at half time 1-7 to 6 points with Barry Porter hitting the net and Damien Gormley, Conor Daly and Conrad Quinn among the point scorers. A fine penalty save from the Westmeath goalie prevented Tyrone from entering the break even further ahead.

Westmeath made the early running in the second half looking the much more settled and energetic side. Tyrone’s cause was not helped by the dismissal of Conor Daly with fifteen minutes on the clock for a difference of opinion with the referee. Injuries to Damien Gormley (in the first half) and Conrad Quinn in the second left Tyrone with a fight on their hands and it was a case of reorganising to accommodate the walking wounded.

Westmeath used their panel to good effect before eventually drawing level with only 5 minutes remaining. It looked ominous for Tyrone at this stage with their opponents pushing for the winner. However showing real Red Hand spirit Tyrone rallied in the closing minutes and several sweeping moves out of defence saw them finish with a goal from Damien Gormley and a point from Stephen Dooher to secure a last gasp 4 point win.
