Mc Carron Revels In Wing Back Role.

Cathal Mc Carron has long been viewed as an outstanding club full back in Tyrone. However many people questioned whether he was good enough to step up to the mark and make the number three county jersey his own. It was feared that if he did not make it at full back he might never fulfil his potential in terms of county football. The Dromore man has had some fine games at full back for the Red Hands but at times has looked naive and nervous and struggled to compete when faced with top quality opponents such as Bernard Brogan or Kieran Donaghy. In fairness to Cathal he is not the only player to have found both these opponents a handful but his form against them made it less likely than ever that the Dromore man would solve any problems Tyrone had on the edge of the square.
Manager Mickey Harte deployed Mc Carron at wing back several times last year most successfully against Laois in the league and the player himself has benefited greatly from the freedom given in his new role. He has been hugely impressive in Tyrone’s recent run and has added an extra dimension to his game with his bursts forward and his point taking, all this without neglecting his defensive responsibilities in any way. The Tyrone supporters who travelled to Drogheda today gave him a very appreciative round of applause as he left the field late in the second half. Although he still has some way to go he has resembled at times a marauding Philip Jordan and it would be difficult to pay him a higher compliment than that. Let’s hope he can maintain his current run of form and if he can manage to achieve half of what Philip Jordan did during his county career then Tyrone supporters will be more than willing to show their appreciation of his talents again.
