As coach before taking the top job ahead of the 2024 season, Stephen McGarry spent three years as the lead coach under Michael McShane. During this period, he helped orchestrate some of the greatest days in Tyrone hurling history, The 2022 Nickey Rackard Cup victory in Croke Park.
His coaching helped secure Tyrone’s promotion to the Christy Ring Cup and Division Two of the National Hurling League. This elevated Tyrone into competitive territory that they hadn’t reached before.
Following the devastating and sudden passing of Tyrone hurling star Damian Casey in 2022, McGarry played a crucial role in supporting the players. Alongside McShane, he kept the tight-knit panel focused, unified, and motivated to honour their teammate’s legacy, ensuring they successfully maintained their status in the higher tier Christy Ring Cup the following season.
Stephen took over as senior manager in 2024 and focused heavily on rebuilding a new team. McGarry has since blooded a wealth of young, emerging talent and is leaving Tyrone with a highly competitive and young group of players.
