Conor McKenna has been called into the Tyrone senior panel. The Red Hands minor captain got a phone call from manager Mickey Harte on Monday morning and he has agreed to join a squad that already includes his brothers Ryan and Emmett.

Conor captained Tyrone minors this season but despite being highly fancied they lost out by the minimum margin to Monaghan at the quarter final stage at the Athletic Grounds on Saturday evening. This was Conor’s third year on the minor panel and he really shot to prominence last season as the Red Hands reached the All Ireland final but lost out to Mayo.

He has been playing regularly for his club Eglish at senior level where he has demonstrated his undoubted ability, scoring 2-3 recently against unbeaten division one league leaders Killyclogher. Manager Harte has obviously seen the greater need for more penetration in attack with the starting forwards managing only four points from play in their recent Ulster championship defeat by Monaghan.

The teenager is expected to travel to Australia later in the year to pursue a career in the AFL. He was highly impressive in a number of trial games that were held in Ireland earlier in the year it will be interesting to see if this will affect his decision as Harte rates him highly as he stated prior to Tyrone’s Ulster championship opener with Down.

“If he wasn’t still a minor he would be part of our senior squad now, without a doubt. I think that he is one of the best players to come on the scene in Tyrone in a generation,” said Harte.

Tyrone face Louth in the All Ireland qualifiers at Healy Park this weekend and he could well get some game time.
