Holders Tyrone may have qualified for another McKenna Cup final yesterday afternoon but the news wasn’t all good for manager Mickey Harte as key defender Michael McKernan faces a spell on the sidelines after getting injured in the Sigerson Cup.

Coalisland clubman McKernan was playing very well for UUJ away to UCD when he picked up a nasty injury. It has been confirmed that he has suffered two broken ribs as well as a punctured lung and has been kept overnight at St.Vimcents Hospital in Dublin.

McKernan burst into the Tyrone senior setup in 2018 and made a big impact as the Red Hands reached the All Ireland final, the defender picking up a worthy Young Player of the Year nomination in the process.

He is likely to miss a good part of the forthcoming National League campaign which begins in a fortnight’s time and comes on the back of Mattie Donnelly’s injury and the uncertainly as to whether Cathal McShane will play in the AFL with Adelaide Crows in 2020.

UUJ lost the game after extra time to UCD, Dublin attacker Con O’Callaghan not featuring in the contest after injuring his shoulder in the warm up.
