Mercurial Mc Curry Makes Impressive Start

Mickey Harte continued to give youth its chance this afternoon as he introduced young Darren Mc Curry to the qualifiers and was rewarded with a super twenty five minutes of football. Ten minutes into a second half that Tyrone had begun with great energy and intensity the manager called Johnny Lafferty ashore and sent the Edendork lad into corner forward.
Now the stories emanating from training were ones of Mc Curry showing scant regard for the names and reputations he was facing regularly at county team sessions and at the in house games in particular he was hugely impressive. He carried that form into today’s game with a virtuoso performance that had the supporters purring and the manager smiling.
His introduction to senior championship football was far from easy against a hard hitting and tight marking Roscommon rearguard. However such is the confidence the young fella has in his ability that it did not faze him in the least. His first chance was taken with some aplomb and settled any sign of nerves. Three other fine points followed as he converted chances from the left and from the right. His pace and ball winning ability were tested and he passed both tests with flying colours. His movement forced the defenders into more than one mistake and his precise pass to Niall Mc Kenna provided the Donaghmore lad with a great chance of a goal which sailed narrowly past the post. It was a hugely impressive showing from the debutante and one that not only ensured Tyrone made it through to the next round but has given the manager further options in terms of scoring.
