Tyrone lifted the Ulster Minor Shield on Monday with a hard fought but well deserved win over Cavan. A brace of late goals from the Breffni side gave the score-line a more respectable look but really Tyrone were comfortable winners.

The winners began the match strongly opening up a 0-4 to 0-2 lead following points from Brannan Molloy, D Ó’Donnaile and a fantastic over the shoulder effort from Lorcan Devlin.

Cavan battled hard to stay in touch but the Tyrone defence, in particular Jarleth Kerr, Ethan McNally and captain Domhlaic Rush hooked and blocked to ensure scores were kept to a minimum. Indeed Rush found time to drive through from defence and set up Piaras McErlean for one of the scores of the day.

McErlean, the hard working centre forward followed up this with a fine pair of points from play after great work from Molloy, Ó’Donnaile and Devlin sending Tyrone in at the break in a strong position.

The second half saw the pace maintained as Ó’Donnaile and Molloy demonstrated the art of accurate free-taking. Tyrone goalkeeper Tanny produced a couple of fine stops to prevent Cavan goals. It was then full forward Ciaran McNulty’s turn, to showcase his talents when he 1-1 in the space of a minute. Both scores coming from his right peg!! Cathal McShane would have been proud of the accurate well placed finishes!!

Tyrone were cruising at this stage and made five changes but Cavan refused to lie down. Their centre forward found the net to give them hope but almost immediately Daly and Molloy combined to set up Devlin who shot low to the bottom corner to seal the deal and Tyrone added the Shield to their minor league title to complete a fine double.
