Ulster Ladies Minor Final

Tyrone 4-6 Cavan 3-17

Despite emerging as Ulster Champions Cavan were relieved to see the end of this game as they faced a second-half onslaught from Tyrone. The Red Hand girls failed to get going at all in the first period allowing Cavan to go in at half-time leading by 15 points. Tyrone’s only scores in the first-half came from a goal from Hannah Ward and point each from Siobhan Sheerin and Grainne Rafferty.

Whatever was said in the changing room at half-time certainly worked and the Tyrone girls were a different team in the second-half. The direct running of Emma Smyth, Niamh O’Neill and Cailin McCann started to cause problems for the Breffni defence. Siobhan Sheerin drove through to score Tyrone’s second goal of the game which was closely followed by a superb goal from Shannon Monaghan. When Aimee Arnold added Tyrone’s fourth major the very loud Cavan support were silenced as their lead had been reduced to four points with 10 minutes left to play. Cavan responded with a couple of points from frees to again widen the gap while Grainne Rafferty converted a free for Tyrone to keep the pressure on the Cavan girls. Then as the game entered injury time a lobbed ball from Cavan which looked to being going the bar dropped into the goal to end the game as a contest. Tyrone didn’t give up and still had time for Niamh O’Neill and Hannah Ward to add a point each before the end of the game.

Following the game Tyrone manager Kevin Bogle said, “I am so proud of the way the girls played in the second-half. At half-time we knew it was an almost impossible task to come back from a 15 point deficit but we asked them to go out again and play the way we know they can and to win the second-half. They certainly won the second-half, and if we had been able to put that performance in for the full 60 minutes then we would have been in with a shout”.
