Extra time heartbreak for the Tyrone minors at Tullamore on Saturday as they lost by two points to Kerry in the B final. The red hands had snatched the extra time in added time when Erin Mc Ginn finished to the net to level things for only the first time in the game. Kerry pushed ahead by two in the first period of extra time though and that sealed the title for the Kingdom.
A slow start from Tyrone had them five points down, they had their chances though. Mc Ginn should have had a penalty when she went down under a challenge, she also tested goalkeeper Caoimhe O’Mahoney on more than one occasion while Hannah Donnelly saw a shot scooped off the line in the first half.
The red hands will rue that poor start. They didn’t raise a white flag until the 24th minute and were guilty of coughing up possession and unenforced errors far too often yet by the break they were still in touch with five points between them.
Tyrone captain Keeva Owens dragged Tyrone back from the brink through the second half. Leah Griffin scored a Kerry goal but Owens – scoring five points and Mc Ginn hitting 1-1 secured extra time. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough in the end.
Kerry had bossed the opening twenty minutes capitalising on Tyrone mistakes as they took time to settle. Griffin, Seoladh Flynn, two from Erin Evans and a Kelsey Cummins point had them five up. Owens opened the Tyrone tally from a free after Mc Ginn was fouled, it could easily have been a penalty. Dana Coyle was on target for Tyrone second as they went close for goals. A late brace of close range frees from Evans in the latter stage opened the gap again to five.
Mc Ginn and Owens did score early in the second half for Tyrone yet the Kingdom always kept their noses in front with Evans and O’Connor points and Griffins goal. Owens had kept Tyrone in the game and Cara Mc Moran’s pass sent Mc Ginn in for the late late equalising goal.
O’Sullivan and Owens had swapped scores early in the first period of extra time before substitute O’Sullivan put Kerry two ahead. There were no scores in the second period, Mc Ginn again tested O’Mahony but that was that for Tyrone.
