ALL IRELAND MINOR SEMI-FINAL

Tyrone 2-6 Cork 1-11

Despite turning in a battling display at Mullingar on Saturday the Tyrone minors missed out on a place in the all Ireland minor final, losing by just two points to Cork. Two second half goals from Chloe McCaffrey and Ardboe’s Annie Devlin had hauled Tyrone back into the contest as they trailed by seven but the experience and quality of the southern girls proved decisive in the final outcome.

Cork dominated throughout but hit some eleven wides and created eight goal chances including five one on ones. Tyrone struggled to match them in several sectors of the park for long periods and but for five superb saves from Tyrone keeper Caoimhe Meeke Cork could have won by a much greater margin. Saoirse Noonan was deadly accurate with frees while midfielders  Ciara McCarthy and Nicole Quinn were superb. Cork attacked with vigour and were resolute and disciplined at the back as they built up a six point lead at the break.

Emma Cleary beat Meeke for their only goal with Noonan, Laura O’Mahony and  Grace Culloty tagging on points. Chloe McCaffrey 0-2 and Meave Maxwell with Tyrone’s three points although Tyrone also had goal chances. Maria Canavan hit a post from a long range free, Maxwell brought out the best in Sarah Murphy with McCaffrey rattling the crossbar.

In a dominant display Cork pulled seven clear by the fortieth minute but Tyrone were right back in the tie when Maria Canavan set McCaffrey up for a cracking goal. Cork pulled away once again and could easily have been out of sight only for the quality of Meeke and full back Aimee Daly as Cork’s forwards created chance after chance.

Anne Devlin fired home a second Tyrone goal with five minutes remaining and it ignited a stirring fightback. Meabh Corrigan, Canavan and McCaffrey took the game to Cork and the impressive Caitlin Kelly was denied a goal when Murphy saved with her feet. Maria Canavan tagged on her third point late on but it was Cork who held out for the win and a place in the all Ireland final..
