Minor Ladies Second Best In All Ireland Final.
Sunday 28.07.2024
Tyrone ladies minor side lost out to Sligo 1-13 to 0-7 at Enniskillen on Saturday in the Grade B All Ireland Final. Darren Mc Cann’s side came up against a side that on the day were sharper, more physical and well capable of creating and taking scores. The Yeats County were also superbly drilled defensively and once their strategy of containing Tyrone’s Sorcha Gormley was in place the Red Hands main scoring threat was blunted.
Sligo were the better side throughout with superb performance in attack and defence. Their full forward line of Jillian Monaghan,Rachel Mc Goldrick and Ellen Giblin gave a master class of creating space and scoring chances and had Tyrone on the back foot from early on. Tyrone struggled to cope with Sligo’s pace and physicality and a tally of one point in the first half tells its own tale as they reached the break 0-7 to 0-1 behind.

Things improved for Tyrone with the introduction of Catherine Moohan towards half time but in truth Tyrone were struggling all over the field.
Tyrone needed a bounce at the start of the second half but it was Sligo who got the opening point of the half through Jillian Monaghan. Sorcha Gormley managed to get herself free and fired over two points for her side but Giblin replied with a Sligo score within a minute as they signalled their intent that with one hand on the trophy they were not intending to let it go.
From then until the final whistle Sligo controlled the pace and flow of the game adding 1-4 while Tyrone managed points from Gormley and Moohan and a late score from Emma Murphy. On the day there was no stopping Sligo as they deservedly claimed the title but the question must be asked how far could this side have gone in the Grade A competition.
