Minors Face Huge Challenge If They Are To Make Ulster Final

Tyrone minors travel to Breffni Park tomorrow in the hope that they can continue to defend their provincial title against a highly fancied Down side. The Mourne lads looked hugely impressive in their opening round victory over Derry. The Oak Leaf County had been tipped by many to be potential All Ireland Champions this year following the performances of St Pats Maghera in the Mac Rory and Hogan Cup series.

However as often happens in minor football the weight of expectation can cause teams to underachieve and Derry were undone by a very determined and well organised Down side. Down of course are managed by former senior manager Pete Mc Grath who knows a thing or two about plotting All Ireland wins. Mc Grath is a shrewd tactician and a great thinker when it comes to Gaelic Football and he will have his side well prepared for the challenge of Tyrone.

Interestingly although they are the defending provincial champions the Red Hands go into this game as underdogs and with such a young side many pundits are expecting a Down victory. Tyrone manager Mickey Donnelly knows his team are up against it but he has seen his side grow and develop and knows they have the potential to cause an upset or two. They were not expected by too many to beat Donegal in the opening round but a solid defensive display saw them home in the end. They will face a serious test of their credentials on Sunday but if they get their tactics right and prevent Down from scoring goals they might just get the better of the Mourne side. With a guaranteed place in an All Ireland quarter final at stake they certainly won’t be lacking anything in terms of motivation. Team captain Ruairi Mc Glone, Ronan Nugent, Christopher Morris and their colleagues are young players with great potential. Sunday presents a completely new challenge for the boys but with the exuberance and confidence of youth they just might cause another surprise and make it through to yet another Ulster Final.

We will be bringing you live updates from the game with all the scores and major talking points.
