Mickey Donnelly’s minor team went into their first round clash with Donegal knowing they were heading to the lion’s den. Most pundits expected Tyrone to be up against it and the opening ten minutes saw Donegal create several gilt edged chances to snatch goals. The young Red Hands looked nervous and edgy early on and were lucky not to have been six or seven points down during the opening twelve minutes of the game. However Tyrone settled to the task and led by team captain Ruairi Mc Glone and defender Shea Hamill they began to assert control of the game. A fortuitous but well executed goal from Ronan Nugent put Tyrone in pole position and they reached the break leading 1-5 to 0-2.
Donegal knew they were up against it in the second half trailing by six and playing against the elements but their hopes were boosted by a sixth minute goal. Team captain and full forward Darragh O’Connor managed to evade the clutches of Shea Hamill for the first time all afternoon and got his fist to a high ball that ended up in the net. Donegal upped the ante after that but only succeeded in registering wide after wide. Tyrone reasserted control and with Frank Burns, Padraig Mc Girr, Cillian Mc Cann and Rhys Quinn working hard in defence they added three further points to win 1-9 to 1-3.
Next up for Tyrone in the Ulster semi final will be the winners of next weekend’s game between Derry and Down. Derry go into that game as hot favourites following the recent success of the St Pat’s Maghera College side in the Hogan Cup.
