Monaghan defeated Tyrone 3-8 to 0-13 in their Electric Ireland Ulster Minor Championship clash at Carrickmore on Saturday evening after a very impressive all round display.

The Farney County was expected to put it up to Tyrone just as they had in the Jim Mc Guigan Cup Final a few weeks ago but few Red Hand diehards expected the outcome to turn out as it did.

Monaghan made their intentions clear right from the off with team captain Jason Irwin and centre back Eoin Duffy leading the charge.

After a dominant first half display a Kyle Connolly goal helped the visitors into a 1-6 to 0-6 lead. Points from Irwin, Liam Mc Donald, Darragh Dempsey and Connolly had Tyrone rattled at the break as they struggled to cope with Monaghan’s drive. Indeed the home side were fortunate to be only three points behind at the break such was the dominance of the team in blue.

Tyrone needed to make a fast start to the second half but it was Monaghan who were quickest out of the blocks. Irwin and Mc Donald hit early points before wing back Dempsey found the net for his team’s second goal to put his team eight clear with less than ten minutes gone in the second half.

The home side did manage to add seven points to their tally with Mark Devlin, Daniel Fullerton and Luke Donnelly among the scorers but they never looked like winning and a third, superbly created Monaghan goal from team captain Irwin kept a rather flat Tyrone side at arm’s length.
