Moortown recovered from a poor start to lift the Grade 2 Under 20 league title when they defeated Fintona at Killeeshil on Sunday afternoon 2-9 to 2-7 following a very competitive and close contest.The winners were indebted to Shea Lawn whose man of the match display saw him score 2-5 out of his team’s 2-9 total.
At the end of the first quarter Fintona led 1-3 to 0-1 following points from Conor Mc Gillion and Callum Welsh and a superb goal from the boot of Zak Devine. All Moortown had to show for their efforts at the first water break was a single point from Shea Lawn.
Moortown were a transformed side after the water break though as they threw off the shackles and hit 1-4 without reply to reach the half time whistle leading 1-5 to 1-3. Shea Lawn was responsible for 1-4 of his team’s first half tally with midfielder Matthew Conlon getting their other point.
The second half saw both sides enjoy periods of control as Moortown extended their lead following points from Lawn and team captain Rian Smith. Both goalkeepers were called on to make vital saves as Fintona strove to find a way back. Points from Mc Gillion (2) and Caolan Donnelly reduced the gap to three before Callum Welsh burst through the Moortown defence and drove the ball to the net to tie the game at 2-6 apiece.
As the game entered the closing minutes the heat began to take a toll on both sets of players. Shea Lawn took and converted a superb Mark and wing back Liam Ryan made it a two point game as Moortown finished the stronger. Conor Mc Gillionconverted a free to reduce the deficit to one but Mortown had the final score with a well taken point from wing half forwardDarragh Kelly securing the title as time ran out on Fintona.
