Moortown Through In Playoff Match
Sunday 27.10.2024
Moortown maintained their hopes of a speedy return to senior football, when they proved too strong for Rock in their Division Two promotion playoff game.
With home advantage and the breeze behind them Moortown produced a dominant first half display to lead 1-9 0-5, at the interval. Shea Lawn was in fantastic form kicking four points in the opening period. Matthew Conlon punched to the net in the 16th minute following an excellent catch from Blaine Ryan and perfect assist from Shaun Conway. The winners established an advantage they were never to lose. Rian Smith kicking the final score of the half, the attack starting right back inside their own 20 metre line Brian McLernon making the interception to set up the score of the match. Despite three first half points from Liam Nugent Rock had a mountain to climb.
Moortown kicked three of the first four scores of the half to extend the lead to nine with twenty minutes remaining but had to withstand a determined Rock fightback. Points from Nugent, Conor McGarrity and Padraig Ward narrowed the gap and when a speculative effort from Shane Murphy found its way to the net only three separated the teams.
Crucially for the Malachys their response was instant as Shaun Conway side stepped his marker before hitting the net. Conor Quinn kicked his second of the half as the lead stretched again, but three points from the visitors, the third an effort from Padraig Ward that was well tipped over the bar by Tony Quinn, reduced the lead to four with ten minutes left.
Rock failed to score again as three Shea Lawn points ensured that Moortown would qualify for the Division 2 promotion play off awaiting the winners of next week’s other semi between Aghyaran and Moy.
Both teams finished with 14, as both number 5s saw red in the closing stages.
