Moortown Win League Title To Complete Double
After a very close and entertaining match at Rock St Patrick’s this afternoon, Moortown overcame Fintona’s challenge to win the Tyrone Ladies Intermediate league.
As early as the 1st minute Sarah Devlin opened the scoring with a nice point from play. Thirty seconds later they could have been behind and but for a brilliant low save by Sinead McVey they would have been. The impressive Emma Loane soon equalised for Fintona after 4 minutes. The opening period was frenetic and soon it was the Fintona keeper Emma Donnelly who was called into action as first Caitlin Crozier and then Emma Murphy were prevented from scoring majors for Moortown. Then just before ten minutes of action Nicole Sweeney pointed from play to put Fintona into the lead.
When they are put on the back foot, this Moortown team always react and soon Caoimhe McNally forced a turnover in the Fintona defence and fed Caitlin Crozier who finished low to the net with her left foot to put the Loughshore girls back in front. Two Sarah Devlin scores from play followed to increase the lead to 4 before a patient build up begun by Eimear Quinn ended with Sarah Devlin scoring her 4th point of the afternoon after 20 mins.
Fintona then had a great spell of their own to level the score line at 1-4 apiece following points from Nicola Donnelly and Emma Loane and a goal from Aoife McGillion. Sarah Devlin kicked Moortown back in front before Emma Loane turned and fired to the Moortown net just before the halftime break.
Two Sarah Devlin frees, following fouls on her and Caoileann Quinn levelled the match ten minutes into the 2nd half before a Nicole Sweeney score from play put Fintona ahead again. The lead changed hands yet again after points from Caoimhe McNally and Sarah Devlin but the sides were soon level once more after a fine score for Fintona by Erin Marlow.
After 60 minutes another patient Moortown attack finished with Sarah Devlin kicking her 9th point of the game, a super score from 35 metres out. Now deep into stoppage time, Moortown played possession football for a while before the ball was worked to Caoimhe McNally who put them 2 points up. To their credit Fintona refused to throw in the towel and an Emma Loane free reduced the lead to one again. A final 10th point from the superb Sarah Devlin was the last score of the game after 66 minutes leaving the final score Fintona 2-7 Moortown 1-12.
Moortown have completed the Tyrone ladies Intermediate League and Championship Double. They play Monaghan champions Corduff the the Ulster QF next weekend.
