Emer Currie was in superb form for Moy at Stewartstown on Sunday hitting 1-9 and contributing to Caoimhe Magee’s late, late goal that won the Murphy’s Junior Championship title for her team. The goal came right at the end of an exhilarating game which looked to be heading for a Coalisland Fianna win as they led by two points with time almost up.
A Caoimhe Coyle goal helped put Coalisland ahead but Moy battled on and with veteran Nina Murphy leading the charge Moy launched one last desperate attack which resulted in Magee’s late, late smash and grab.
The Fianna will be very disappointed but they contributed hugely to what was an excellent game of football. With a title at stake both sides enjoyed periods of dominance but neither team looked capable of making a decisive break and extra time seemed a real possibility.
Currie was on fire from early in the game and after a run of three unanswered points Coalisland got back in the game with a goal from Milena Mihadjuka ten minutes in. She did well to get herself in position after some great work by Coyle and Mc Sherry created the chance while Eadoin Early was also on target.
Coalisland then enjoyed a period of dominance and Nicole Murphy forced two good saves from Leanne Daly in the Moy goals. The Fianna missed several good chances to extend their lead but points from Mc Sherry (0-2) Caeleann O’Donnell and Murphy stretched the lead to six points.
Moy responded positively to the challenge with Currie linking with Mc Alary and firing over while Donnelly’s speculative effort finished up in the Fianna net to leave it a three point game at the break.
Moy made a great start to the second half. Currie scored 1-3 in the third quarter taking a pass from the vigilant Jill Sheridan before finding the net. The Fianna response was immediate.
Early pointed and O’Donnell sent Murphy in for the goal. The same player tagged on a point to put her team ahead again before Moy sub Commiskey levelled the game once more.
The tie swung again as scores from Currie and Magee put Moy in control with five minutes remaining.
As the game headed into injury time a goal and a point from Coyle looked to have won it for the Fianna with time running out. A ninth Currie point narrowed the gap to just two points and The Fianna squandered a late chance to stretch the lead to three and put the game beyond their opponents. That missed chance proved crucial as Caoimhe Magee rounded off a superb day for her and her club with her match winning goal right at the death.
