Tyrone senior Camogie team hosted Wicklow in the All Ireland Camogie Premier Junior Championship at Derrytresk and after a real championship tussle lost out 1-12 to 1-09.

The home side began well but found the physicality and athleticism of the Wicklow girls hard to handle at times. Aine Cunningham converted a forty five early on but within five minutes Tyrone were 1-1 to 0-1 behind after Aoife Nic Dhonnacca pointed from close range and then fired to the net as the visitors hit the ground running.

Points from Cunningham and Aine Mc Nulty reduced the gap before Wicklow full forward Nic Dhonnacca landed a brace of scores from play. Tyrone got themselves back into the game when their best player on the day Eimear Cunningham found the net t reduce the gap to a point. However Tyrone finished the half strongly with points from Mc Nulty (2) and midfielder Aisling Hagan to send the sides off at the break with Tyrone leading 1-6 to 1-5.

Wicklow took to the field for the second half determined to make their mark and that is exactly what they did. Ciara Connolly landed two fine scores from play before the same player converted a long distance free to put her team ahead again.

Aine Mc Nulty and Roisin Byrne swapped scores but Wicklow’s greater physicality and fitness helped them to keep ahead. As the game entered the final quarter Eimear Cunningham added two further points from play to reduce the deficit to one. Unfortunately for Tyrone that was to be their last score of the match as Wicklow added two late points to seal the win 1-12 to 1-9.

Next up for Tyrone is the small matter of a derby clash with Armagh next weekend at Healy Park.
