The weekend of Friday 5th – Sunday 7th July saw 21 players travel from Tyrone to the annual Wallball Nationals in BreaffyHouse, Castlebar.

Sean Kerr(Breacach) was fancied to be a big threat in the Mens Open after his recent Mt Talbot and Ulster wins. Sean was seeded number 2 with Martin Mulkerrins, last year’s runner up to Conor McElduff being listed as the top seed.

Both players won through all their games with ease, actually reaching 31 before the time was up. Sean knocked out Conor Noone(Moycullen) 31-11 in his first game putting him into the quarter final against Jamie Kelly(Abbeyknockmoy). Once again he sailed through 31-12 and secured his place in the Semi final against Darren Doherty(Emyvale).

After defeating Doherty 31-11, Sean was up for the challenge. With a change of format in the final which was two games of 15, Martin proved too strong and denied Sean the title with scores of 15-11, 15-6.

Niall Kerr was triumphant in the Mens Golden Masters. Niall faced Swinford’s George Miller in the final with Miller taking a six point lead twice. Miller was feeling confident at this stage but in typical Kerr style Niall pulled back in the last couple of minutes to claim the title 17-13.

Clodagh Munroe(Carrickmore) was Tyrone’s other Champion as she claimed the girls 15&U Title. Clodagh fought her way convincingly through a group of 23 girls and took her place in the final against Galway’s SadhbhNi Fhlaithearta after defeating Emma Kinane(Abbeyknockmoy) in the Semi final. In this very competitive group Clodagh sealed the victory on a scoreline on 17-13.

Chris Curran(Loughmacrory) was seeded top of the Silver Masters Grade. He faced Broadford’s Pat Murphy and went on to play Graham Casburn(Moycullen) in the final. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be for Chris this year as he lost 19-15 making him National Runner Up.

Loughmacrory’s Clare Conway made her debut in the Ladies Open. Ciara Mahon(Kilkenny) knocked Clare out of the Cup, but Clare wasn’t giving up easily in this tough category and fought back into her game against Pauline Gallagher (Swinford) taking her place in the Plate final against Leixlip’s Leah Doyle after defeating Pauline by one point. Clare put in a good effort against Leah but the recent All Ireland Minor champion defeated Clare making her Ladies Open Plate Runner Up.

Michaela McCartan (Breacach) and Dara Curran(Loughmacrory) both suffered semi final defeats. Michaela was beaten by outright winner Laura Finn(Sligo) and Dara pushed number two seed Jason O Toole (Inis Mór) to a tie break.

Well done to all who took part and all who travelled to this massive tournament.

The 20th and 21st of July see Loughmacrory play host to the 6th Annual Lough Showdown where a large number of top players will be competing. Please go along and show your support, it promises to be a great weekend.
