Newtownstewart made up for their championship final defeat at the hands of Donaghmore when they defeated Trillick in a high quality and very exciting league final at Clanabogan on Thursday evening 4-11 to 2-11.

Both teams produced some fantastic football in a real thriller of a game that swung one way and then the other before late goals from second half sub Jamie Mc Aleer sealed the win for the St. Eugene’s.

Early scores from Cormac Rodgers gave the winners a good start as they built up a three point lead after seven minutes. Trillick then hit a real purple patch as, inspired by James Garrity and Michael Gallagher, they moved four clear hitting 1-4 without reply including a superb goal from James Garrity.

Newtown were rattled but with Torigh Nicholas and Pauric Rodgers showing well up front they reached the break two in front 1-6 to 1-4.

The second half was every bit as good as the first as both sides created numerous chances. A second goal from James Garrity put Trillick 2-6 to 1-8 to the good but almost immediately that lead was wiped out as Cormac Rodgers cut in from the right before unleashing an unstoppable shot to the net.

Luke Mc Hugh and Ryan Kelly swapped points before Jamie Mc Aleer bagged the first of his two goals to put Newtownstewart in control. Ryan Kelly landed a brace of points for Trillick to keep them in the game but Mc Aleer found the net again to seal the win and the league title for a talented Newtownstewart team. Mind you it took two superb saves by goalkeeper Gavin Traynor and a brilliant block by Aodhan Mc Namee to ensure there was to be no late drama.
