How far out was that free that Peter Canavan kicked over to break Armagh hearts in the 2005 All Ireland Semi Final? Where exactly did Owen Mulligan gain possession before he started to destroy the Dublin defence and blast past Stephen Cluxton? How many yards from goal was Adrian Scullion when he thumped over that last gasp point to keep Eskra in this year’s Tyrone Intermediate club championship? What was he doing there in the first place with number 3 on his back?

It seems that Mickey Harte’s ‘Total Football’ ethos is alive and well in Tyrone and far beyond the county senior team training field. Those who witnessed the two games in Dunmoyle on Sunday evening couldn’t have failed to notice that all of the number 3’s had a huge impact in both the Senior and the Intermediate games.

First we’ll start with Coalisland number 3 Peter Donnelly. His sending off came at a bad time for Coalisland.  Omagh looked like they were winners until deep into injury time. Next up Omagh’s number 3 Conor Clarke who started at midfield and contributed two points from play.

Anyone who witnessed the Loughmacrory and Eskra game earlier could not have failed to be impressed by the level of effort from both teams in difficult conditions. There was plenty of excitement in the closing stages as Loughmacrory captain, and number 3, Damian McAleer drilled over what looked like the winning point in the last few seconds of normal time.

Step forward Eskra’s number 3, Adrian Scullion. He grabbed hold of the ball 65 metres from goal and a few steps later let fly. Three seconds of silence and then a huge gasp and roar from the Eskra fans. 55, 60, 65, 70 metres from goal? Who knows how many yards it will be from goal this time next week and in the years to come.

Is it a case of frustrated defenders having a shot at goal because the forwards are struggling or good footballers capable of defending and attacking? A Tyrone man would say the latter about Tyrone club footballers but Adrian Scullion is from Down!
