Omagh CBS lost out narrowly to Patrician High School in the final of the Oisin Mc Grath Cup after a close and competitive game on Thursday afternoon on a score line of Patrician 4-12 Omagh 1-16. The Monaghan school opted to play wind assisted in the first half, used it to score their first point almost immediately from the throw in.
Omagh settled and kept possession well as Patrician packed their defence and tried to hit Omagh on the break. Peter Colton levelled the scores after 5 mins before a long ball into the edge of the square from Patrician college was won by their corner forward Oran Connolly who finished it to the net. This was followed by a great point by their CHF Ferghal McEnaney. Omagh responded well and points from Thomas Meehan and Dairmuid Martin left the score at 1-3 to 0-3 after 15 mins.
Omagh conceded a second goal from a penalty in the 20th minute but rallied for the remainder of the half with further points from Peter Colton and Dairmuid Martin leaving the score at half time 2-5 to 0-6.
Patrician High School were a physically stronger team than Omagh but playing with the breeze in the second half Omagh dominated possession. Scores from Eoin McEvoy, Michael Mc Namee and Dairmuid Martin made it a two point game. Patrician High were struggling to get the ball out of their own half but looked dangerous on the break when they did. Cathal Farley playing in a familiar sweeping role for the CBS thwarting numerous attacks.
Omagh were dealt a blow when Jack Gartland received a black card in the 18th minute. Patrician High School used the extra man advantage to tag on a few scores but Omagh kept the score-board ticking over with points from Dairmuid Martin and Eoin McEvoy to leave them just a point behind approaching full time. A pointed free from Peter Colton levelled the game in the second minute of injury time.
In ET Patrician High School got off to a dream start scoring two goals almost immediately, from a penalty, and a well taken goal after their corner forward reacted quickest to a ball coming back off the post. Omagh rallied for the duration of ET but found scores hard to come by especially after being reduced to 13 men in the second period of ET. Michael Mc Namee scored a goal near the end but Patrician High School had done enough to run out winners by 5 points.
