Omagh CBS made it through to the 2019 Mac Rory Cup Final after comprehensively defeating Armagh in their semi final replay at The Athletic Grounds on Friday night. Having looked in serious bother at half time in Wednesday night’s abandoned fixture Kieran Donnelly’s side made the most of that particular break to defeat their opponents 5-9 t0 2-10 in Friday night’s rearranged game.
Omagh’s forward line have looked potent at times in this season’s competition but have struggled to find consistency in front of the goals. However their ability to get goals at vital stages in this game was crucial in their defeat of the Armagh outfit. Simon Garrity (2) and Mark Hayes (3) found the net with some fabulous finishing as they capitalised on the chances created.
The winners put themselves in the driving seat at the break as they led 3-4 to 0-6. Playing confidently they kept their opponents at arm’s length after the restart and even though Michel Conroy bagged two penalties for Armagh late in the game it was too little too late to prevent Armagh from defeat.
Armagh opened brightly to move 0-2 to 0-1 ahead but were rocked on their heels after eleven minutes when Antoin Fox put Simon Garrity through for Omagh’s opening goal. Within three minutes Omagh tightened their grip on the game when Trillick man Garrity bagged his second goal of the game. Armagh’s response was spirited and effective with Conroy, Kieran and midfielder Conor Lavery all landing points as they cut the gap to two.
In the 22nd minute Conroy ghosted through the Omagh defence only to be denied by a superb save from Omagh keeper Oran Grimes. Liam Gray pointed for Omagh before Conroy converted another free for the Armagh college. Sean O’Kane’s side piled on the pressure but suddenly they found themselves further in arrears when Omagh bagged their third goal of the half. Full forward Mark Hayes created and converted the chance finishing low into the left hand corner of the goals.
Another fine save by Omagh goalkeeper Grimes and further points from Gray and Eoin Montgomery sent Omagh in at the break in a strong position.
Oisin Hughes and Fullerton swapped points after the break before a Conroy free narrowed the gap slightly. It was game over though in the 43rd minute when Hayes burst through to fire home via the bar.
Fullerton and Gray added points as did wing half back Tom Donaghy. With a minute of normal time remaining Conroy converted a penalty for Armagh but in the next attack Hayes completed his hat trick. Conroy had the final say from a spot kick after he himself had been fouled himself but its Omagh CBS who will play St.Michael’sEnniskillen in the final on March 18th.
