Omagh CBS Mc Grath Shield Team Defeat Cavan

Omagh CBS made the long trip to Ballyconnell for their opening fixture in the Mc Grath Shield competition. A goal from Cormac Darcy in their first attack gave them the perfect start but with Senan Smith in fine form the Cavan lads reached the break leading 1-5 to 1-2 with Omagh’s two points coming from Darcy and Aodhan Corry.
The Cavan lads began the second half three clear and in confident mood. They had been the better side in the first half and fully deserved their three point half time lead. Omagh’s chances were not helped as they had to play most of the second half with fourteen men after losing a man to a second yellow card.
Facing an opponent growing in confidence Omagh were forced to up their intensity and with Dara Mc Garvey, Tom Gallen, Conor Fyffe, Aidan Farley and goalkeeper Turlough O’Hagan in superb form they outworked their opponents all over the field.
A second goal for the CBS from Tom Gallen on forty seven minutes gave them something to hold on to and although Cavan pushed hard the Omagh defence remained steadfast.
Both teams could have added to their second half totals but good goalkeeping and strong defensive play made sure there were no further goals. Omagh showed considerable resolve as they held on for a narrow 2-7 to 1-8 win with their other second half scores coming from Corry, Gallen, Matthew Garrity and Shea Mc Ginn.
