Omagh CBS completed their Mac Rory Cup league campaign with a come from behind win over pre match favourites St Mary’s Magherafelt. Trailing 1-10 t0 1-5 with four minutes remaining the CBS produced a storming closing six minutes as they hit 1-4 without reply to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat on a final score of 2-9 to 1-10.
After an opening five minutes of shadow boxing the Derry lads got the scoreboard turning with a fine point from wing back Dara Mc Guckin. Omagh were enjoying plenty of possession but found space in the Magherafelt defence hard to come by.
However Adrian Mc Gurren was looking sharp and his ability to get out in front of his marker meant Omagh always had a ball winning target man up front. Mc Gurren pointed from play after seven minutes before converting a fourteenth minute free and a well struck score after eighteen minutes. Indeed with a bit more composure his third point could have hit the net but Mc Gurren settled for the point as Omagh moved two clear.
Two minutes later and Omagh found themselves five ahead when Fearghal Mc Gurren split the defence with a peach of a pass that found Tiarnan Loughran inside the big square. The big target man showed considerable composure as he finished to the net to make it 1-3 to 0-1 with twenty minutes gone.
Conan Hegarty stretched the lead to six before Magherafelt got themselves back in the game when centre forward Eamon Young slalomed through the Omagh defence before finishing to the net. Two points from midfielder James Sargent left a point between them at the break with Omagh leading 1-4 to 1-3.
The sides swapped scores early in the second half with Fearghal Mc Gurren and Eamon Young on target for their respective sides. However at that stage the Derry lads were starting to look the part as they added points from Young , Sargent, Mc Guckin, Cathair Mc Bride and corner back Dara Mc Kenna. With four minutes of the second half remaining and five points between the sides Omagh’s unbeaten record looked set to end.
However the closing minutes saw Thomas Meenan, Sean Mc Cann, Oisin Mc Creanor, Michael Mc Namee, Enda Donaghy, Brian Gallagher and their team mates go for broke. They seemed to find that other gear that had been missing for most of the second half as they turned over their opponents numerous times while creating and scoring chances. A brilliantly struck penalty from full forward Mc Gurren was the catalyst that set things rolling. Hegarty fired over to leave one between the teams as Magherafelt began to look leggy. Omagh finished off with three further points from the outstanding Gallagher, Harley Patton and Adrian Mc Gurren to take the win and finish the league section unbeaten.
Final score: Omagh CBS 2-9, Magherafelt 1-10
Next up for Omagh is a knockout clash against St Paul’s Bessbrook in Healy Park Friday 13th December with a 7:00pm throw in.
