Omagh CBS met St Patrick’s College Cavan in the quarter final of the D’Alton Cup, with the game played on Wednesday afternoon in Middletown GAA in Armagh. After a highly competitive game Omagh came out on top on a scoreline of 1-14 to 0-10.
The game took a while to spark into life. With Omagh playing with the benefit of a strong wind in the first half resolute defending from Cavan ensured that it was 12 minutes before the first score was registered, Patrick Turner scoring after some great play by Dan Sheridan. Cavan responded immediately to level it at one point each. With the help of the elements Omagh controlled possession for the remainder of the half scoring a few well worked points and their dominance paid off when Sean Collins scored a great individual goal. The scoreline at half time was 1-05 to 0-1.
With the elements in their favour Cavan started the second half well, with full forward Ben O’Reilly scoring some eye-catching points. However, Omagh weathered the storm and after some solid team defending which kept Cavan at bay, points from Cormac McGarvey and Patrick Turner restored their seven-point lead. The remainder of the half was evenly balanced with both teams providing periods of resolute defending and well worked scores. Wing back Daithi Corrigan showed great composure to score the final point of the game for Omagh after a great team move.
Omagh will now go on to play with St Mary’s Magherafelt or St Patrick’s College, Dungannon in the Semi Finals.
