Opening day defeat for ladies
Sunday 06.02.2011
Tyrone ladies were denied by a sharp looking Monaghan in their opening Bord Gais National League tie today at Emyvale, writes Damien Donnelly.
The recent Dowd cup winners Monaghan picked up where they had left off as Catriona McConnell led the scoring returns in a 2-14 to 0-7 win.
McConnell and Caoimhe Moran got goals for Monaghan in the first half; Tyrone creating chances of their own but without the same return ratio.
It was 2-7 to 0-5 at the break for the hosts and they kicked on to wrap up the points as the final half unfolded.
Gemma Begley, the Donnelly’s, and company contributed to the Red Hand cause plus Oriel custodian Edel Monaghan reacted well to save a few Tyrone goal efforts that could otherwise have made the contest closer.
There is still plenty of time for new Tyrone boss Martina Dillon and her management team to shape the squad and the league provides a mixture of experimentation plus development opportunties for the camp.
New players and more established ones can gel together as the season gathers momentum, with hopefully points being picked up along the league way before attention turns to championship matters.
