Dungannon defied the odds with a power packed display to overwhelm prematch favourites Trillick and lift the Intermediate championship title at Healy Park on Sunday afternoon. It was an outstanding display from the Clarkes throughout the field as they emerged worthy 4-11 to 0-14 winners to return to senior football.

The winners got off to the best possible start with a clinical finish to the net from full forward Patrick Quinn with just over a minute gone on the clock. Dara Gallagher, Emmett McFadden and Lee Brennan all had points for the St.Macartans but with Padraig McNulty a tower of strength in the midfield engine room Dungannon were more than holding their own. It was McNulty who charged through the middle to offload to Matthew Walsh for a second goal and that meant that despite playing against the wind Dungannon led 2-4 to 0-9 at halftime.

The superb Quinn hit an outstanding brace of points in the opening stages of the second half with Walsh on target as well and while Gallagher replied for Trillick it was clear that the momentum was all with the Clarkes. In the 43rd minute Walsh showed great strength to hold off a challenge to fire in his second goal of the afternoon and when Trillick had midfielder Richard Donnelly sent off seconds later it was as good as over. Daniel Grimley raced through to blast to the roof of the net a couple of minutes later before team Captain Keifer Morgan and McNulty both pointed which meant that all starting forwards as well as both midfielders had scored. Niall Gormley, Brennan and Mattie Donnelly all had late points for Trillick but it was Dungannon’s day and they now go forward to meet the Down champions in the Ulster Intermediate quarter final.
