Owen Roes will host their 5th annual 5K road race next Thursday evening 5th July. This year’s race, as per last year, will be run over a fast course which is designed to give competitors a chance to improve or set personal bests on the evening.
Twelve months ago just shy of 200 runners took to the starting blocks in the picturesque North Tyrone village with Joseph Kennedy coming home in a course record of 15 mins 42 seconds just ahead of the female winner, Irish international athlete Ann Marie McGlynn who dipped under the 16 minute mark by 7 seconds.
That course record time, while looking fairly formidable, will be under threat once more explained Owen Roes Chairman Jude Kelly. “The course is essentially the same this year as last in so much it starts high above Glenmornan village on the Crockan Road and loops downhill past Moorlough towards the GAA pitch in the village dropping a total of 60m in total from start to finish. Last year’s course and event received a lot of positive feedback, and this is testament to the Club volunteers in the background who do a lot of work in the weeks and months ahead of the event.”
“One of the areas for improvement from last year was our finishing mark. Last year we swooped into the Club for the finishing line. However this year’s finish will be just past the Club making it a faster finish for the seasoned athlete.”
The Owen Roes 5K is in its 5th year of existence and forms a critical part of the Club’s calendar as Jude explained. “There is obviously the income we get from the event, which all gets recycled back to providing and up keeping our facilities. However getting the community out to watch the runners and providing an event for them is also important.
In addition we encourage all our adult footballers, both male and female to complete the run as it helps inspire the youth. Indeed on the back of last year’s 5K there were discussions about getting a running group based at the Club. Thanks once again to a dedicated core of volunteers ‘Moorlough Walk, Jog and Run’ are now up and running and we’re hopeful some of them will complete their first 5K on the night, which is fantastic”.
The Leckpatrick chairman explained that the number one aim on the night is participation and some fun. However he acknowledged that road racing brings a competitive edge: “The prize fund this year has top prizes for the first male and female home at £100 per category. In addition we will have prizes for 1st and 2nd in U20, senior, 40+, 50+ and 60+ categories with a number of spot prizes on offer as well thanks to many generous sponsors. In addition all the runners are invited back to the Clubrooms post-race for complimentary barbeque and prize giving. It should be a great night.”
Registration on the night is from 6.00pm to 7.15pm at the Owen Roes Clubrooms with runners off at 7.30pm. The cost is £6 for adults, £3 for U16s and U12s costing £1 with running open to all levels of runner.
