Owen Roes will host their now annual 5K road race next Thursday evening 4th July. As usual the race will be run over an ultra fast course which is designed to give competitors a chance to improve or set personal best times on the evening.

In 2018, over 150 runners took to the starting line with Lifford Strabane’s Brandon McGrinder crossing the line first in a blistering 16 minutes 40 seconds just ahead of Club mate Gareth McCullagh. Once again a big field is expected with every competitor aiming to complete the picturesque course at the foot of the Sperrins in a PB time.

In the 6th year of existence, the course record for the event stands at 15 mins 42 seconds, a time clocked by Foyle Valley’s Joseph Kennedy two years ago with International runner Ann Marie McGlynn clocking a course record of 15 mins 53 seconds a time which exceeds her best time over 5000m on the track by 10 seconds.

Although Kennedy’s time is hugely impressive, it provides a great marker for the seasoned runner to target. Event organiser Paul Houston explains ‘We’ve ran now with the same course the last few seasons and it’s very popular among Club athletes who see it as a great chance to pick up a quick time. The race starts high above Glenmornan on the Crockan Road weaving down past Moorlough and it’s a straight run more or less then down towards Pairc an Ghleanna Gaelic Pitch. The drop from start to finish is around 60m or so.’

Chairperson of Owen Roes’, Sarah Jane Kelly, added ‘It’s a great that we are now able to make this an annual event and one that everyone looks forward to. However it wouldn’t function without the hard work by our volunteers in the weeks and months leading up to the race, and of course our valued sponsors.’

Sarah Jane added ‘Obviously there is a fund raising element to the evening. However it’s also great to put on something for the people of Leckpatrick to come out and get involved in or support, and not have to travel miles to do so. Last year a Club started in the village on the back of our 5Ks, “Moorlough Walk, Run, Jog”, and it’s great to see the people who started from modest beginnings out now tearing into the 5Ks.’

The Leckpatrick chairperson explained that ‘The number one aim on the night is getting people out and keeping fit. The various 5Ks etc in the calendar give those that do like to run a target to aim for, keeping them motivated and of course there are many who are in it for the fun too. We’ve also a 1K fun run for U12s and we hope that some of our adult players will accompany and encourage our U12s over that track.”

Paul Houston acknowledged that road racing brings a competitive edge, “The prize fund this year has top prizes for the first male and female home at £100 per category. In addition we will have a number of spot prizes on offer as well thanks to many generous sponsors. It should be a great night.”

Registration on the night is from 6.00pm to 7.15pm at the Owen Roes Clubrooms with runners off at 7.30pm. The cost is £7 for adults, £3 for U16s and U12s costing £1 with running open to all levels of runner. Pre-registration is advised and this can be found on Klubfunder.com and search for Leckpatrick.
