The opening of Pairc Chormaic in Eglish on Sunday was the fulfilment of many months of planning and organisation by the entire Eglish community. The whole day was planned with rigorous attention to detail and reflected the wide range of sporting and cultural interests that were central to Cormac’s life and the life of the Eglish community.
The setting of the pitch, its finish and the fine summer weather all added to the suitability of the occasion. Music, culture and sport mingled seamlessly as the day was marked with hurling, football and camogie. The large crowd that filled the venue at various times throughout the day must have hugely impressed with what has been done to mark the memory of the Eglish community’s greatest son.
Even though the club’s senior team came up short in their attempt to defeat Carrickmore in the last game of the evening there was a great sense of satisfaction and achievement at what has been put in place to mark Cormac’s memory. Cormac was a leader on and off the pitch and surely this fine playing field will help to inspire future generations of young Gaels from Eglish to follow in his footsteps and emulate his achievements. If it helps to do that then that will be an even more fitting and appropriate legacy to the great man.
