The annual Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Champions Tournament throws in this Saturday at 1:00pm with a preliminary round tie between Derry champions Glen of Maghera and Monaghan champions Ballybay. This well established tournament run by Dromore GAC has become one of the highlights of youth football within Ulster and always provides high class entertainment for the good crowds that attend. Played in the memory of former Dromore and Tyrone minor Paul Mc Girr who died so tragically playing for Tyrone, all proceeds from the tournament go the the ‘The Spirit of Paul Mc Girr’ Fund which does such wonderful work for the needy in Lusaka, Zambia.

The tournament is sponsored by the Tyrone Association in Dublin, Adrian O’Neill and Spires Art from Omagh with the winners receiving a wonderful bronze Cuchullan trophy. The Glen team featuring the outstanding Conor Glass are the early favourites for the competition having impressively accounted for Faughanvale in the Derry final and they will be seeking to regain the trophy they last won in 2011. However with Monaghan football on a high at present Ballybay will be coming into the contest in confident mood having beaten Clontibret after a replay in a tough encounter when winning the Monaghan title. A feisty encounter is expected at the wonderful Gardrum Park setting in Dromore as both teams seek to win the trophy currently held by last years winners St. Enda’s, Glengormley.
