Galbally defeated local rivals Pomeroy in a gripping LCC Group senior championship first round encounter at Dunmoyle that required extra time to decide.

Frank Burns and Kieran McGeary exchanged early points with Cormac Donnelly and Sean Murphy before the Plunketts grabbed a well worked goal through Gavin Goodfellow. Donnelly and Jude Campbell traded points before the Pearses drew level with a well taken Liam Rafferty penalty. Murphy and Daniel Kerr then ensured that Galbally had a narrow 1-6 to 1-5 lead at the interval.

Burns and Paul Rafferty swapped points on the restart before Murphy and a brilliant Kerr effort pushed the Pearses three clear. Campbell responded for Pomeroy before Burns palmed home a goal for the lead. A Donnelly free levelled matters but two Ronan Lagan scores from placed balls had Pomeroy’s noses in front again going into the last ten minutes. Kerr and Declan Murphy brought the sides level before defender Hugh Pat McGeary put Pomeroy ahead going into injury time. With the last kick of the game teenager Donnelly held his nerve to knock over a “45” to force extra time, 1-13 to 2-10.

Pomeroy were reduced to fourteen men in the first period of extra time and Galbally turned around with a narrow advantage. Sean Murphy then scored a fine individual goal and while Burns replied with two points it was Galbally who finished the stronger with Liam Rafferty blasting to the roof of the net as it finished 3-15 to 1-13.
