AIB Ulster Intermediate Football Championship
Pomeroy 0-10 0-11 Cullyhanna

Pomeroy exited the Ulster Intermediate championship in the crueliest of fashion, losing by the minimum of margins to Armagh champions Cullyhanna, in Healy Park.

A free kick deep into injury time was converted by Aidan Nugent to edge in front. There was still time for more drama, Pomeroy secured the kick out, and as they entered the Cullyhanna 45, the referee sounded the final whistle to the disbelief of the majority of the crowd.

There was little between the sides throughout. The opening quarter saw Pomeroy lead on three occasions before being pegged back each time.

A great score from Ronan Duffin, followed by an equally impressive Brendan Burns score, saw the Tyrone champions taken the advantage with Cullyhanna relying heavily on Aidan Nugent frees, he was to finish with 0-7, all from placed balls.

A Pomeroy defence expertly led by Hugh Pat McGeary kept the Cullyhanna attack at bay.

Ronan Duffin kicked his fourth of the half to give the Plunketts a 6-5 advantage at the short whistle.

Two excellent Kieran McGeary at the commencement of the half extended the lead, but with Cullyhanna gaining the initiative around the middle, they reeled off 5 in a row to take a two point lead with 8 minutes remaining.

A few tactical changes and substitutes had the desired effect and Pomeroy rallied with late scores from Duffin and McGeary, which looked like the game was destined for extra time before Nugent’s late winner.
