LCC Tyrone SFC Round 1
Clonoe 0-23 Moortown 2-14

The competitive nature of the LCC Tyrone Senior championship was once again evident at Edendork on Sunday afternoon as extra time was required to separate Clonoe and Moortown.

It was a contest that swung one way and then the other and we came perilously close to having a penalty shoot out after a high ball into the Clonoe defence was flicked onto the post before being cleared. In the end the O’Rahillys just did enough to get through with their mixture of youth and experience. They had ten different scorers on the day with Connor McAliskey weighing in with 0-7 while their bench contributed five points with Danny McNulty grabbing three of those.

Moortown enjoyed a great start to proceedings despite playing against the wind when a Paul Quinn point was followed by a well worked 3rd minute goal from Blaine Ryan as he palmed to the net from close range after Shaun Conway had squared it to him. McAliskey opened the scoring with a beauty from distance before respective full forwards Peter Devlin and Fintan McClure exchanged points. Connor Quinn got forward from defence to split the posts for Moortown but moments later McAliskey cancelled that out with an outstanding effort from 60m out despite being off balance.

Midfielder Stephen McNulty then got in on the act with two brilliant points from down Town before another long range effort from McAliskey levelled matters. Paul Coney then became the latest Clonoe player to score from distance as they got their noses in front for the first time only for Paul Quinn to equalise. Karl Hagan and Ryan Quinn swapped points before a fine score from substitute Dwayne Quinn left Clonoe leading 0-10 to 1-6 at the interval.

A good run and point from half back Brian McLernon levelled matters in the first attack of the second half before Coney landed another beauty with his weaker left foot from out on the left wing. Ryan Kelly and McClure exchanged points before Moortown struck for their second goal in the 42nd minute when Connor Quinn smashed an unstoppable shot to the top left hand corner of the net. Big Dan McNulty had been introduced at this stage and he split the posts from an acute angle but back came Moortown with a well struck long range free from Devlin. It was end to end stuff and with ten minutes to go McAliskey converted a brilliant long range free into the wind.

Declan McClure took a superb catch in midfield and when the ball was transferred to McAliskey he did the rest with a classy finish from out on the right wing to level things, 2-9 to 0-15. Devlin edged Moortown back in front but Declan McClure had the final say with a fine score to leave it 2-10 to 0-16 and extra time.

Clonoe played against the wind in the first extra period but they made a bright start as Declan McClure scored from a mark and straight from the kick out his brother Fintan left two between the sides. Thomas Doris reduced the deficit with a point but that was quickly cancelled out with another top drawer finish from McAliskey from a tight angle. Moortown lost Sean Paul Quinn to a black card before Ciaran Corr left three between the sides. Moortown though showed great character as Devlin and Ryan Kelly both landed eye catching scores to leave it 2-13 to 0-20 at the turnaround.

Within thirty seconds of the restart Danny McNulty had scored for the winners and he repeated the dose with a superb score after cutting in from the right wing to split the posts with his left. Attacking half back Ryan Morrow then put four between the sides before a Devlin free left just a score separating them. Moortown played to the final whistle and right at the end they were unlucky to hit the post with a goal chance as Clonoe held out to set up a quarter final meeting with Donaghmore.
