QUINN-direct/UGAAWA MONTHLY
MERIT AWARD for NOVEMBER ‘11

Accountants are used to getting their figures correct and they know that one-and-one makes two but when it is a goal and a point it means a lot more. That’s what accountant MICHAEL REA will tell you. It is also what he proved to be correct.

His goal and a point were the scores that clinched the Ulster Junior Football Championship title for his club Derrytresk, during November, when the little team ‘from the hill’ defeated Monaghan champions Cremartin, at Armagh. He also rifled over three points in his team’s semi-final win over Eire Og (Armagh) last month.

But it wasn’t just for his scoring that Rea, a Tommy Murphy Cup medallist with Antrim, won the Quinn-direct/UGAAWA Merit Award for November. His massive contribution to team play and generalship played a major role in both victories during November.

“I’m absolutely overwhelmed with this news,” was Michael’s reaction when told that he had won the Merit Award. “I’m over the moon. I never thought that I would be in the running as, I know, there were other great performances during November. I know the history of the Merit Award and all the great players who have won it. I have watched the pictures in the papers and it is a dream come true for me to be a winner.”

Michael (33) played minor and U21 football with his native Tyrone but it was only when he moved to live in Glenavy that he got the chance to play at senior county level, under Jody Gormley.

For this award, Michael Rea ‘out-scored’ Jamie Clarke, who had an outstanding hour in Crossmaglen’s Ulster SFC success, and Caroline Little, who was excellent in Lisnaskea’s All-Ireland Ladies’ Intermediate Championship final victory.

The winner’s award of an engraved Belleek Living vase, specially designed and engraved silver cuff links by Omeath jeweller Garrett Mallon, training gear from O’Neill’s International Sports and a UGAAWA Sports Voucher was presented to him, by UGAAWA chairman JP Graham at a function in Quinn’s Corner. He will also get two tickets and overnight accommodation for the UGAAWA Silver Jubilee Banquet next year.
