Beragh are through to the quarter finals of the LCC Intermediate championship after a closely fought encounter against Augher at Loughmacrory on Sunday afternoon.
It certainly was a test for both sets of players ion awful weather conditions and in the end the difference between the sides was that Beragh carried more of a scoring threat. The Red Knights kicked nine wides over the course of the hour to their opponents eight while the winners also dropped five efforts short but in the end the accuracy of Oisin Donnelly got them over the line, the centre half forward finishing with six points to his name. Augher on the other hand only managed one point from play from their forwards with team Captain Aiden McElroy giving a trojan display in midfield kicking half of their tally.
Augher had the wind at their backs in the first half and they started brightly landing the opening four points of the contest with Eoghan Keenan, Darragh Kavanagh and McElroy (2) on target, the latter with a brilliant brace. The superb Ben McSorley opened Beragh’s account in the 16th minute and they closed the gap further thanks to efforts from Donnelly and Niall Owens. McElroy’s second point with his weaker left foot meant that the St.Macartans led 0-5 to 0-3 at the short whistle.
McElroy picked up were he left off on the restart with another fine point but then Beragh hit back. Donnelly scored from play as well as from a free with full forward Declan McCann also on target before an outstanding effort with the outside of his boot from substitute Aaron Owens levelled matters at 0-7 each, Kavanagh with the other Augher point from a free.
Two Donnelly frees then put Beragh in front for the first time in the contest but they lived on their nerve ends as Augher tried to respond. Kavanagh knocked over a free but in injury time Donnelly made sure that the Red Knights progressed when he converted his fifth free of the game.
